Straw Bales required!

We are very excited to be working on something a little bit different! We have a new client who wishes to build their house from straw and has actually some of the bales required bought already. We aren’t aware of too many such houses in Northern Ireland and think this will be the first in County Armagh.

You are probably thinking about the ‘Big Bad Wolf’ and looking around you for Three Little Pigs but before you laugh step back and think a little bit……. Aside from the cost which is a fraction of a ‘traditional’ block wall with expensive modern insulation boards a strawbale wall will have a U-Value of 0.13 – some 50% lower than the Building Regulations require. Construction methods are very, very simple almost childlike allowing very direct client interaction and participation. Further benefits are walls that will ‘breathe’ making the house very pleasant to live in and of course there is the aesthetics of a massively thick wall where rounded corners and niches can be created to give a home full of character.

We still have a lot of research and learning to do, particularly in regard to the foundations, substructure and damp-proofing which is obviously very important when building with straw! “A good hat and a pair of boots” is, believe it or not, one of the key components to a successful straw bale house. ┬áThe project is currently still on the drawing board but will hopefully be submitted to Planning very soon. Keep an eye on the website to check progress….
